WELCOME

The XVII Portuguese Polar Science Conference will focus on the theme “Humans in the Polar Regions”, highlighting the experiences, challenges, and impacts of human presence in polar and analogous environments. Aligned with the international agendas of COMNAP, FARO, and SCAR, this edition aims to strengthen the contribution of the Portuguese scientific community to global debates on sustainability, safety, and human well-being in the polar regions.

Although this year’s edition will place a special emphasis on the social sciences — with a particular focus on psychology — the conference remains committed to its multidisciplinary scope, welcoming contributions across a broad range of fields: Marine Environment (A), Terrestrial Environment (B), Atmospheric Environment (C), Cryosphere (D), Social and Human Sciences (E), Planetary Sciences (F), and Resilient Infrastructures (G).

Human presence in the polar regions is inevitable for research, logistics, and international cooperation, yet it continues to raise concerns due to its environmental impacts. At the same time, the polar regions represent one of the most demanding and hazardous work environments on Earth — physically, socially, and psychologically. It is therefore essential to study the factors that shape human adaptation, performance, and well-being, while also developing innovative solutions to support those who live and work in these extreme contexts.

The conference thus seeks to foster knowledge exchange, stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration, and reflect on how to better understand, support, and enhance the human experience in the polar regions, promoting a balance between scientific exploration, environmental sustainability, and the quality of life of the communities involved.

CONFERÊNCIA PORTUGUESA DE CIÊNCIAS POLARES (CPCP) / PORTUGUESE CONFERENCES ON POLAR SCIENCES
 The CPCPs are the forums where the most recently advances in Portuguese polar projects are presented. It is also a place to delineate new strategies for national and international cooperation. The conferences are targeted to the national polar community, focused on research in polar regions, and also to students,  professors, and the wider comunity interested in the polar regions and their global importance.
In close interaction with PROPOLAR /portuguese Polar Program). these public events are boosted by national institutes and research centres, which integrate teams who promote research on polar regions - Artic and Antarctica.
